President of Ghana pays visit to Danida-financed bridges in Upper East Region

15.08.2019  16:56
Nana Akufo-Addo, president of Ghana recently paid a visit to two out of seven bridge-projects financed by Danida Business Finance.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has paid a visit to the on-going construction of a bridge in Kulungugu, which is a small town in the Upper East Region of Ghana.  The Kulungugu Bridge plays an important role for transportation to and from Burkina Faso, and is one of the major entry and exit points for commercial goods to Ghana’s northern neighbours.

The President also made a visit to the Doninga Bridge. These two bridges are part of seven bridges in Northern Ghana that Danida Business Finance  is sponsoring through a Mixed Credit Facility of 63 million euros.

Resident Engineer Shimeles Molla Tsegaye presents the bridge project to President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Construction of these bridges has been in the pipeline for a long time. In 2007, the Government of Ghana received assistance from Danida for the emergency repair of three bridges destroyed by floods in Northern Ghana - Kulungugu, Garu and Doninga. Subsequently, Ghana Highway Authority  approached Danida for funding for permanent replacement of these three bridges and the construction of additional four bridges.

Construction of the bridges began in 2018 and the estimated completion date is end 2020. When completed, the bridges will form key links in the regional road network. To enable full use of the bridges, the access roads on each side are also being constructed to a reasonable standard to permit uninterrupted through-traffic. The bridges will provide accessibility from remote villages and production sites to markets and open up the eastern corridor of the country from Tema to Ouagadougou, in Burkina Faso.

The bridge in Kulungugu is about to be build.

Danida Business Finance provides soft loans for infrastructure projects that cannot otherwise be financed on commercial terms. Such projects have to be sustainable, support the national development plans of the government, and contribute to sustainable growth and employment in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
