Processing time

The processing time for visa applications is normally up to 15 calendar days. We ask all applicants to apply well in advance of their intended travel date.

The counting of days starts from the day the Embassy receives your application, which normally happens on the first workday after the application is submitted to VFS.

Normal processing time for a visa application is 15 calendar days. However, please note that processing times depend on case volume. Expect longer processing times in May, June, July, August and December due to peak season travel.

Some applications are subject to prior consultation in one or more Schengen countries before a visa may be issued. The processing time in these cases will usually be at least 10-12 days. Applications may in some cases have to be referred to the immigration service in Denmark and may thus take between 30 and 60 days to process — the latter when the immigration service requires further documentation. For more information on third countries whose nationals are subject to prior consultation with Schengen member states, please refer to the website of the Danish Immigration Service (annex 16).

Applicants will be contacted by VFS when a decision is reached and submitted documents are ready for collection. Documents belonging to applicants from other countries than Ghana can be returned by courier, provided that the applicant has paid the courier fee when submitting the application to VFS.

A visa application can be launched as early as 3 months prior to the arrival date in Schengen, and it is strongly recommended that an application be launched no later than 20-30 days prior to departure. Here is why:

1. You will normally be granted an appointment with VFS Global for submission of your application within 14 days

2. Case processing does not begin until the application arrives at the Embassy of Denmark. Hence, your application is not launched when you apply online, or when you have your appointment with VFS Global. The shipping of your documents to and from the Embassy of Denmark adds at least 4-8 days to the processing time.

3. An application lodged less than 15 calendar days before the intended departure may be accepted at the Embassy, but the final decision might be taken after the date of departure.

Please note that case processing may be extended to 60 days if further scrutiny is required. Also missing documentation at the time of the appointment at the Embassy may delay the processing time.

Please also note that the Embassy of Denmark cannot be held responsible for technical difficulties, human errors or shipping delays in the processing of visa applications.
