Power Solutions Discussed in Abidjan

Thursday is the last day of the Nordic Power Mission in Abidjan. So far it has been three busy days for the delegation with seminars, knowledge-sharing, site visits and business get-together event.

The power mission was kicked off with an exciting seminar including speeches from power experts and financial institutions. Among the plenty instructive presentations were the Banque Ouest Africaine de Developpement (BOAD), The African Guarantee Fund (AGF), the sustainable energy fund for Africa (SEFA) and Mr. Ibrahim Togola, CEO of Access/Africa Power who hold an inspiring speech about market opportunities for renewable energy in rural decentralize and grid connected electrification in West Africa.


Wednesday and today, Thursday, site visits are on the program. The aim of these site visits is to give the delegation a first-hand impression of Abidjan in terms of commercial and industrial activities in regards to scale and capacity.

The first visit was to the CIPREL refinery. This refinery is the largest of its kind in West Africa with a distillation capacity of 3 million mt/ yr. In the future investment plans are to increase to from 3 to 10 million mt/yr. The visit gave the delegation and the plant managers the opportunity to discuss solutions for handling the waste from the distillation, where a Danish solution could be needed in the future.


The second visit was to the Akouedo biogas project. This is a typical case showing some of the opportunities and challenges in financing renewable energy projects in the region. The biogas plan is implemented by the Danish company Enviscan and financed by BOAD


Wednesday evening offered a business get together event. Here, business people were gathered for a cocktail party hosted by the Ambassador of Denmark Ms. Tove Degnbol and the Honorary Consul Dominique Leroy from Maersk Line in Abidjan. The scope of the evening was to share business experiences in Côte d'Ivoire and introduce the Danish and Nordic companies to the large group of local based business people and financial institutions.


Thursday is the last day for the delegates in Abidjan. The program of the day offers visit to Azito Thermal Power Plant, a lagoon boat trip with Maersk Line and the chance to investigate the SOLIBRA/Carlsberg brewery’s infrastructure. The day ends with a business dinner where the guest speaker is Ms. Oddveig Aarhus from Eurocham.
