Embassy of Denmark & Novo Nordisk hosts stakeholder media event to celebrate World Diabetes Day 2020

Did you know that in Ghana more than 281,000 people are living with diabetes and more than 147,000 remain undiagnosed? November 14, 2020 marked the World Diabetes Day and to mark the occasion, the Embassy hosted a stakeholder media event together with Novo Nordisk-leading Danish Healthcare Company to create awareness about diabetes and highlight Novo Nordisk’s activities in Ghana. This year’s celebration was under the theme “Nurses and Diabetes”.

Ms. Naja Møller Jørgensen, Head of Trade, in her remarks emphasized the role of partnerships with the private sector in providing quality healthcare for Ghanaians. With their impressive efforts and results, the collaboration between Novo Nordisk and key stakeholders in Ghana’s health sector is worth noting.

Guest speaker, Dr. Roberta Lamptey, Diabetologist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, spoke on the need for a multi-disciplinary approach in treating diabetes. She stressed on the important role of nurses as they constitute 59% of healthcare workers and are the first point of contact with patients. Her good advice included a balanced diet and physical activity of up to 150 minutes per week as some of the ways to manage diabetes.

Novo Nordisk has in collaboration with its partners on the Base of Pyramid project (BoP) reached out and offered support to many diabetes patients and the general public. According to Mr. Samuel Kofi Tovor, Access to Care Manager, Novo Nordisk, the BoP project strives to improve access to quality diabetes care and insulin for people in low-and middle-income countries. In the past six years, Novo Nordisk has collaborated with the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service and the National Catholic Health Service to provide diabetes support services to thousands of patients through their one-stop-shop Diabetes Support Centres. They have initiated and sponsored nine Diabetes Support Centres and one Diabetes Centre of Excellence in Ghana.
